Welcome to Piano ABC!

Project Aim:

This dissertation project is aimed at creating an interactive online resource that can be incorporated into the learning and teaching experience in the studio or home. This convenient and accessible multimedia resource consists of features for facilitating the choice, preparatory pieces, sequencing, technical preparation, and musical interpretation of waltzes by Fryderyk Chopin for early-advanced piano students. Each waltz entry contains background and other information relevant to the teaching and learning of the piece, including musical and technical issues.

Preparatory pieces and etudes in the website are also accompanied by basic information, description, technical level, identification of musical or technical concept explored, and sequencing of other pieces preceding or following based on the difficulty.

For more information about period designation, description of levels, selections of discography and editions, and more, visit Appendix.

Selections:

Each Chopin waltz can be selected in the Browse page. Due to limited resources and time, the collection of piano waltzes of Chopin used in this website has been limited to the following:

bullet Waltz in A minor, op. 34, no. 2
bullet Waltz in D-flat major, op. 64, no. 1
bullet Waltz in C-sharp minor, op. 64, no. 2
bullet Waltz in B minor, op. post. 69, no. 2

Learning Center:

The user can learn more about genre, composer, definitions of terms, and different pedagogical approaches to technical issues and musical concepts by visiting the Learning Center.

State of Research:

If you are interested in the annotated bibliography of bibliographies of piano solo music from pedagogical perspectives, please visit State of Research page. I have conducted this limited research in order to assess what was available during the beginning stage of my project. This research, however, is in no way comprehensive, and there are more pedagogical resources available both on-line and in libraries across the country.
